* Sophisticated podcast download engine gives you complete control of how many podcasts to download and how long to keep the old versions. Downloads new content in the background, so you spend more time enjoying you feeds, and less time waiting on them.

* BeyondPod provides full control over what is being downloaded over your data connection. Update a single feed, feeds in a given category, or all feeds. Download a single podcast, the latest podcasts, or all podcasts for a given feed. Nothing happens without your knowledge. Podcast downloads can be scheduled to occur at a specific time, only when connected to WiFi, or only when the phone is charging. BeyondPod also offers an option to automatically (1) Turn WiFi on, (2) Update your feeds, (3) Turn WiFi back off.

* BeyondPod's integrated podcast player tracks what podcasts you have listened to, and supports automatically deleting podcasts at the end of playback to save space. There is also a configurable TiVo style "commercial skip" that lets you easily skip over content that you are not interested in.

* BeyondPod's Smart Playlist automatically generates playlists based on your listening preferences. (For example: First play the 2 newest podcasts of feed A, Then play the oldest podcast of Feed B. etc.). If you follow multiple podcasts Smart Playlist is an excellent way to always listen to what you want.

* BeyondPod's Home Screen Widget gives you one-button access to your podcasts, SmartPlay, and SmartPlay updates directly from your phone's Home screen.

* Integration with Google Reader allows you to easily import your Reader subscriptions. BeyondPod will also synchronize the "Read" and "Starred" status of individual posts so you can read the same feed on both PC or Phone.

* Assign feeds to various categories (such as News, Sports, or Technology) for convenient filtering by topic.

* Use BeyondPod to discover new podcasts and RSS feeds. Search for feeds, import feeds from a variety of popular directories, from Google Reader, or from external OPML files.

* Import any local files (music, audio books, voice notes etc) and make them playable in BeyondPod audio/video player as if they were podcasts.

* BeyondPod supports both wired headsets and Bluetooth receiver (via the AVRC profile).

* Use the Sleep feature to automatically turn the podcast playback off after predetermined period of time.

* Supports Atom, RSS 2.0, RDF and OPML feeds.

Recent changes:
* Added a support for Variable Speed Playback (1x, 2x...) using the Presto plug-in. Each feed can also have a "preferred" playback speed configurable in the feed properties.

* Widgets background (dark or transparent) and the 'Next' button (Next, Skip forward/back) can now be configured.

* Added an option to automatically restart SmartPlay when the current playlist ends.

* Category list can now be reordered.

* Multiple videos can now be queued for playback on the playlist.

BeyondPod Podcast Manager Review

– Edit Review

If you are addicted to your Google Reader and are looking for a mobile option, then BeyondPod is your best bet.

The first thing I noted about BeyondPod (apart from the name being similar to iPod) is that the app is more than just a podcast directory. BeyondPod is closer to Google Reader than it is to Listen, as you can import, view, and manage almost any type of RSS feed.

BeyondPod integrates quite nicely with Reader, allowing you to import existing subscriptions onto your Android device for your mobile enjoyment. Should you happen upon a new set of feeds you'd like to follow, you can also export subscriptions back to your desktop.

When you first open BeyondPod, you see a quick-start screen that gives you the basics of how the application works. I accidentally hit the "Home" button on my phone while reading some of these tutorials. When I got back into the application, the quick-start guide did not open up again--instead, I was greeted by a list of preloaded subscriptions. It took me a while to figure out how to get back to the guide.

Navigating menus in the app can be tricky at times, and sometimes swiping the screen does not register properly. It also takes a bit longer than it should to add a new subscription. However, I find that BeyondPod has an astounding RSS Feed search.

BeyondPod can handle video, audio, and text feeds. Streaming a video podcast with full 3G chugs along with only one or two minor pauses. You have the option to download videos, which I highly recommend if you don't have 3G coverage everywhere you go. Strangely enough, the "YouTube Top Rated Videos" feed opens up as text with a link to the video that can be opened in either the browser or the stock YouTube application.

Audio podcasts work the same way as videos; you have the option to either stream or download, and the playback screen is reminiscent of the native music application. The preloaded Dilbert daily comic strip is formatted perfectly to fit the screen, and is an enjoyable read.

If you are addicted to your Google Reader and are looking for a mobile option, then BeyondPod is your best bet. I highly recommend picking up the unlock key ($6.99) to keep enjoying all the features of the application--it reverts to a "lite" version after seven days.

Our user reviews IN DETAIL:

I've tried several others

This app works very well for podcasts. Their SmartPlay allows you make a playlist with oldest/newest first and which category should be played first. It has skip backwards/forwards xx seconds. Download on WiFi only, schedule what time each category should perform downloads. There's a lockout feature, so when the screen locks, you can still access BeyondPod and not allow you into the Home screen. This is very customizable. Like with any podcatcher/player, give is a few days to get used to it. I paid for and used DoggCatcher for 20 days. It was too hard to learn and use. BeyondPod allows you to really use it and decide, not just 24 hours.
