$299 PC Bundles Year of Net Access

Microworkz Webzter comes with Cyrix MII-300 CPU, 3.2GB hard drive, modem, and WordPerfect 8.

Microworkz Computer has announced the Webzter Jr., a $299 PC that comes with a year of unlimited Internet access and Corel's WordPerfect Suite 8.

"With a year of Internet access valued at roughly $240, the effective net price of the Webzter computer itself is only about $50," said Rick Latman, president of Microworkz, in a statement.

The Webzter Jr. features a Cyrix MII-300 processor, 32MB of memory, a 3.2GB hard drive, a V.90 modem, 2MB of video memory, a 3D sound processor, Windows 98, a Universal Serial Bus port, a year of Net access via Earthlink, and a one-year hardware warranty--but does not include a monitor. The systems are expected to start shipping next month.

Microworks also announced two more models. The $499 Webzter includes a Cyrix MII-366, a 4.3GB hard drive, an 8MB AGP graphics board, a 24X CD-ROM drive, a 1.44MB floppy drive, a dual-amplified speaker system, and a game port. The $699 Webzter Sr. features an Advanced Micro Devices K6-2-400 processor, a 6.4GB hard drive, 64MB of memory, and a 40X CD-ROM drive.

The company claims it can assemble 200,000 PCs a month at its Seattle-area facilities. Its Web site currently warns customers to expect shipment delays of as much as four weeks.
