Most U.S. Banks Offer Internet Services

Survey finds U.S. banks offer ATM information, payments, and more online.

Internet banking has become an important part of everyday business for U.S. banks, according to a study by the market research firm Gomez Advisors.

Thirty-nine out of the 100 largest consumer banks now offer an Internet bill-paying plan, compared with 17 such banks last year, according to the Spring Scorecard compiled by Gomez Advisors.

Banks are "adopting [the Internet] as a channel," said Chris Musto, a Gomez Advisors analyst. Out of the 55 banks rated, 82 percent are either preenrolling customers for Internet banking or providing online enrollment forms, the study said.

In addition, 62 percent of those 55 banks provide real-time information on ATM transactions through the Internet, the study found.

The banks rated as having the best Internet services are Security First National Bank, Wells Fargo Bank, Citibank, Salem Five Cents Saving Bank, and Bank of America, the research firm said.

The scorecard surveyed the 55 banks for cost, ease of use, customer confidence, relationship services, and on-site resources, Gomez Advisors said.
