Via Revs Up Its Rivalry With Intel
Company announces a new motherboard featuring its latest chipset, the Apollo P4X266E.
Via Technologies will include its recently announced Apollo P4X266E chipset on a new motherboard available Thursday from the Taipei component manufacturer, it says in a release.
The Apollo P4X266E chipset supports the latest versions of Intel's Pentium 4 processors, which use either a 400-MHz or 533-MHz front side bus to connect the processor to the chipset. The Via P4PB 266E motherboard is the first from the company to feature the Apollo P4X266E chipset, announced in May.
The motherboard will use DDR266 SDRAM and feature six USB 2.0 ports for connecting peripherals such as digital cameras and MP3 players. It also supports Intel's AGP4X technology for connecting a graphics controller to the chipset, and ATA/133 for fast connections to a PC's hard drive.
Pricing information was not immediately available.
Moving Into New Markets
Via is known primarily for its chipset and microprocessor business, but the Via Platform Solutions Division was created in October of 2001 to compete with other major motherboard manufacturers who opted to include Intel's own 845 chipset family in their motherboards.
A motherboard from Asustek Computer was on sale in Tokyo's Akihabara district featuring Intel's 845G chipset in April.
Via and Intel have engaged in a long-running legal battle over charges that the P4X266 chipset and Via's C3 processor infringes on Intel patents.
Via in June reported a 24 percent loss in revenue year-on-year, as PC demand remains flat.
