Although it's an average performer, this drive is a great choice for those who require a little extra tech support and documentation.

WHAT'S HOT: The CD-RW performance of this model is much improved over that of its predecessor, the GCE-8320B; the drive took 1 minute, 8 seconds--3 seconds off the fastest time we've seen here--to burn 100MB of files to CD-RW using packet writing.
Excellent and thorough manuals for both the drive and Roxio's EasyCD Creator software guide you through installation and use.
WHAT'S NOT: This drive's CD-ROM read performance is somewhat slow, ranking in the lower third of all drives we've tested for our chart. Its application installation time is average, but its digital audio extraction results puts it third-to-last on that test (24 seconds off the leader, Sony's CRX195A1). The drive lacks support for Mount Rainier.
WHAT ELSE: The LG GCE-8400B proved to be an adequately fast writer, taking 3 minutes, 18 seconds to write 650MB to CD-R on the fly--42 seconds (18 percent) slower than our current leader, the Pacific Digital Mach 48. LG offers a relatively generous 13 hours of toll-free technical support on weekdays and 8 hours of support on Saturday.
UPSHOT: Although it's an average performer, this drive is a great choice for those who require a little extra tech support and documentation.
