The first details on a device from South Korea's Samsung Electronics running Pocket PC 2002 Phone Edition have emerged after the U.S. Federal Communications Commission granted approval for the product.

The SPH-I700 can operate on Code Division Multiple Access networks at 800 MHz or 1900 MHz, and analog Advanced Mobile Phone Service networks at 800 MHz, according to documents submitted by Samsung to the FCC. A photo of the sample supplied for testing carried the logo of Sprint.

Calling on Microsoft

Microsoft's Pocket PC 2002 Phone Edition software, designed for PDA-like devices that also include some phone functions, is currently available in two products: the Jornada 928 Wireless Digital Assistant from Hewlett-Packard, and another device being branded by operators including Voicestream Wireless in the U.S. and mmO2 in the U.K.

Both devices operate on Global System for Mobile Communications networks. When Voicestream launched its device in the U.S. in August, Microsoft said a product supporting CDMA would be available within a few months.

Microsoft has recommended the software be run on an Intel StrongArm processor running at 206 MHz, but no details of the hardware used by Samsung were included in the FCC filing. However, a second photo included in the filing revealed a camera attached to the top of the device, which differentiates the I700 from the existing products on the market.

Latest Option

The device is the latest in a line of advanced cellular telephones or wireless PDAs from Samsung due to hit the U.S. market in the coming months.

The first is likely to be the Palm-OS based SPH-I330, which is an updated version of the SPH-I300 that went on sale last year. Samsung also recently won FCC approval for its SPH-I500, which is another Palm-OS based devices that looks more like a conventional cell phone than a PDA. Both are expected to be sold through Sprint PCS Group.

Additionally, the company has also received FCC approval for a cell phone based on Microsoft's Windows Powered Smartphone operating system, which is intended for cell phones that have limited PDA functions. The SCH-I600 model that was submitted to the FCC carried the logo of Verizon Communications.

Some features of products submitted for approval by the FCC can be changed by the manufacturer and, although it is rare, sometimes approved products never make it to market.
