Software maker PalTalk announced Tuesday that it will soon be releasing the 7.0 version of its PalTalk instant messaging software.

PalTalk's latest software is interoperable with both Microsoft's MSN Messenger and America Online's Instant Messenger.

While PalTalk allowed its users to chat with AIM users in the past, the MSN interoperability is new.

The privately-held New York company is hoping that the latest version of its software will bolster its position in the fierce IM market which is currently dominated by AIM.

Free and Easy

PalTalk 7.0 is free and will be available on September 24 from the company's site at PalTalk.com.

PalTalk currently claims more than 15 million users for its free client, and it also offers a subscription service with souped-up multimedia capabilities and services.

The company has been trying to make in-roads into the tightly guarded IM market by going against the grain by offering interoperability.

PalTalk has also hopped into bed with peer-to-peer player StreamCast Networks, providing an IM service for StreamCast's Morpheus P-to-P network, dubbed Morpheus Messenger.
