FTC Enlists Turtle to Promote Online Security

Mascot heads up campaign to raise Internet safety awareness among kids and parents.

Aiming to get consumers up to speed on security in the fast-paced online world, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission unleashed a new educational initiative Thursday featuring "Dewie the e-Turtle."

The initiative, introduced at the Privacy2002 Conference in Cleveland, Ohio, seeks to provide consumers with resources on how to guarantee their security and privacy online with a new Web site featuring tips and information, and, of course, the ubiquitous Dewie.

Dewie, described as a "Webwise turtle, designed to appeal to kids and their parents," serves as program mascot encouraging consumers to ensure their online security by using strong passwords, installing firewalls and running antivirus programs, among other measures.

"Even though turtles take their time, Dewie crosses the finish line first because he takes the appropriate steps to avoid a disaster," the site reads.

The new site has resource sections for consumers and businesses, as well as a kids page and a page in Spanish, featuring Dewie in what appears to be a soccer uniform.

Security Lessons For Kids, Adults

The initiative is part of a campaign launched by Federal Trade Commissioner Orson Swindle to create a "culture of security" in which consumers, businesses and educators work together to promote online protections.

"The idea is to have Internet security practices become second nature - just like looking both ways before crossing the street," Swindle said while introducing the initiative.

While the inclusion of Dewie appears to be an effort to cater to kids, a FTC spokeswoman said Thursday that the site is for both adults and children.

When asked why Dewie stands upright and has eyebrows that float above his head, the spokeswoman said, "Don't go messin' with my Dewie!"
