Konica last week announced two new digital still cameras, one targeted at the high end and one at the low end of the competitive marketplace.

The Digital Revio KD-500Z is based on a 5-megapixel CCD image sensor and looks similar to the company's current 3-megapixel and 4-megapixel Digital Revio models. It also includes some of the same features, such as dual memory card slots, one for Secure Digital cards and one for Memory Stick.

Features of the camera include a 3 times optical zoom, 1.5 inch polysilicon thin film transistor LCD, and 2MB of built-in memory, which allows for a few VGA resolution images to be taken with no memory card. The camera starts up in 1.3 seconds, can record up to 30 seconds of audio, and is capable of resizing images for e-mail use.

The camera measures 3.7 inches by 2.2 inches by 1.2 inches, and weighs 6.9 ounces including batteries and a memory card. It will go on sale in Japan on October 25 for $756.

Lightweight Model

The Digital Revio C2 is a small, light, 1.2-megapixel digital still camera targeted at the same marketplace as Sony's Cybershot U or Casio Computer's Exilim.

The credit card-sized camera is .5 inches thick and weighs 2.5 ounces, which makes it the lightest camera in its class at present, according to Konica.

The image sensor is a CMOS type, which uses less energy than a CCD but delivers a slightly inferior image. Other features include a flash, delay timer, and digital 2 times zoom. On the rear of the camera is a 1.6 inch LCD monitor.

There is no memory card slot, but the camera contains 14MB of internal memory, enough for around 27 images at the camera's maximum resolution of 1,280 pixels by 960 pixels, and 110 images in VGA (640 pixel by 480 pixel) mode.

The Revio C2 will go on sale at the end of November and Konica is planning to produce 50,000 units per month. The retail price has yet to be announced.
