Fossil Puts Palm OS in a Wristwatch

Upcoming Wrist PDAs will feature touch screens, 2MB of memory, and standard Palm apps.

Watchmaker Fossil has licensed the Palm OS for a watch-cum-PDA that will be out in mid-2003, Fossil and PalmSource said Monday.

The Wrist PDA features a touch screen, a stylus integrated into the band, 2MB of memory, an infrared port, and standard Palm applications including address book, date book, and memo pad, Fossil and PalmSource said in a statement released at Comdex in Las Vegas.

PalmSource of Sunnyvale, California, is Palm's software unit.

Fully Functional

Earlier this year, Fossil launched a set of Wrist PDAs that could hold data transferred from handheld computers, but were not fully functional PDAs.

The new Wrist PDA is fully compatible with the Palm OS platform and will run all Palm OS applications, according to the statement. It can be used as a stand-alone device, unlike the earlier Wrist PDAs.

The Fossil Wrist PDA will be manufactured by Flextronics, a large Singapore-based contract manufacturer. Flextronics also worked with Fossil of Richardson, Texas, to develop the device, according to Fossil and PalmSource.

The Wrist PDA will be sold under the Fossil and Abacus brands and will be in stores in the U.S. and other countries by mid-2003, Fossil and PalmSource said. Fossil sells its products in 90 countries around the world.

Pricing for the new devices was not disclosed.
