Top 10 CD-RW Drives

The chart welcomes three newcomers, including two new Best Buys.

Top 10 CD-RW Drives

Our Best Buys go to two new drives: The TDK 48X VeloCD tops the chart on the strength of its first-rate performance in writing to both CD-R and CD-RW. A strong combination of fast write times and an attractive $70 price tag earned LG Electronics' GCE-8480B a second-place debut. Although the LG drive was slower at writing to CD-R than the TDK drive was, it wrote to CD-RW discs just as fast, burning 100MB of data in a little under 1 minute in our tests.

The GCC-4320B combination drive, another new model from LG that earns tenth place, won't win any performance awards, but it has a bargain price for a relatively quick CD-RW drive that also reads DVD-ROM discs at the faster-than-average speed of 16X. We also tested the Samsung SM-332 combo drive, which can read DVDs at 12X speed. It failed to make the chart, however, as it was slower and more expensive than the LG combo drive.

The price of CD-RW drives continues to fall; the units on our chart average just under $85. Several of the drives we have tested previously have gotten cheaper, too. The Pacific Digital Mach48 CD-RW, for instance, cost $110 when we first reviewed it for our September 2002 issue; it now costs $85.
