LG Philips LCD Unveils 52-Inch LCD TV

Display is said to be the largest of its kind, and features a higher resolution than most HDTVs.

LG.Philips LCD has developed what it says is the industry's largest thin film transistor LCD for high-definition TVs to date, the company said Thursday.

The joint venture of South Korea's LG Electronics and Netherlands' Koninklijke Philips Electronics unveiled a 52-inch wide-screen LCD prototype with a resolution of 1,920 pixels by 1,080 pixels--twice as many pixels than found in conventional displays for HDTVs, the company said in a statement.

The prototype display features the 16:9 aspect ratio and a wide viewing angle of 176 degrees, LG.Philips of Seoul said.

The Big Picture

The largest LCD previously shown was Samsung Electronics' 46-inch television prototype, which was unveiled in October. The display featured 1280-pixel by 720-pixel resolution and a 170-degree viewing angle.

The largest commercially available TFT-LCD screen is a 40-inch LCD television, also by Samsung of Seoul.

LG.Philips LCD hopes to start mass producing the 52-inch LCD TV by late 2003 and sell it worldwide.
