WHAT'S HOT: In image-quality tests for our February 2003 roundup of 19-inch LCDs, the Pro Lite 4821DT-BK easily emerged as one of the best-performing models. Its color reproduction was impressive, yielding realistic skin tones and a rich level of color saturation on our test image of a fruit tart. Microsoft Word documents also looked impressive, with sharp text and brightly colored icons.

The panel's straightforward design, accented by a trendy blue power indicator, was pleasing. The Pro Lite 4821DT-BK comes with several extra features, such as the ability to pivot 90 degrees to portrait mode, as well as a USB 1.1 hub with four ports for attaching peripherals. A connector at the bottom of the panel, near the DVI and analog inputs, accommodates an optional $76 speaker module. The screen swivels left and right smoothly via a pivot on the monitor stand. A cover in the back of the stand cinches and hides all cables coming from the monitor.

Iiyama provides a three-year warranty on the monitor, including the backlight. Furthermore, Iiyama representatives say that they will replace the monitor if you are unhappy with it for any reason--even because of a single nonfunctioning pixel.

WHAT'S NOT: Iiyama's high-quality monitor comes at a price--namely, $1058, or roughly $100 more than other pricey LCD displays we've looked at recently.

If you use the monitor in portrait orientation, be sure to update the included pivoting software to the latest version. The older software that shipped with our review unit caused instability on our Windows XP test system.

WHAT ELSE: The Pro Lite 4821DT-BK's horizontal viewing angle is adequate, but at about 119 degrees (according to PC World's measurements) it pales in comparison to the viewing angle some other monitors can achieve.

The monitor is equipped for mounting to a wall or attaching to an optional articulating arm (not sold by Iiyama). The panel we tested was black, but this model is also available in white. In contrast to the generous warranty, Iiyama's telephone tech support is a bit skimpy, at 12 hours per day, Monday through Friday.

UPSHOT: The Iiyama Pro Lite 4821DT-BK provides stellar image quality, many useful extra features, and a solid warranty. However at $1058, it's best for demanding users who can take advantage of its top-notch image quality and features.
