Fuji Film Boosts XD Picture Card Storage

Recently launched memory card will be available in a 256MB version, but details remain scarce.

Fuji Photo Film will begin selling a 256MB version of its recently launched XD Picture Card at the end of January, the company said last week.

The new card will go on sale in Japan on January 30. Fuji Film announced no price for the new card, but a retailer in Tokyo's Akihabara electronics district is advertising a price of $121 for the card.

That is slightly cheaper than a similar capacity Secure Digital memory card although almost double the price of a 256MB Compact Flash card, which costs around $67.

Sticking With Sony

All formats are cheaper than Sony's new Memory Stick Pro, which was announced last week at the Consumer Electronics Show, and will cost around $189 for a 256MB card, according to the company.

The XD Picture Card format was announced in July last year by Fuji Photo Film and Olympus Optical as a replacement for the SmartMedia format that both companies were still using but which was increasingly falling behind newer memory card formats in several areas.

The first digital cameras to use the new format went on sale in September and Fuji Film launched 16MB, 32MB, 64MB, and 128MB cards at the same time with a promise of a 256MB card in December, which makes the new card about a month late in appearing.
