Mobile Computing: Sprint's New High-Speed Wireless

James A. Martin

WIRELESS

Opinion: 3G vs. Wi-Fi

Among wireless network technologies, will 3G cellular service or Wi-Fi eventually predominate? According to Qualcomm chair and CEO Irwin Jacobs, it's a no-brainer: 3G networks will become more popular than Wi-Fi with mobile professionals. "[With 3G] you don't have to go to a hot spot," Jacobs says. "It's available wherever you might be. ... That's the one, I think, that will end up being the preferred service." Wi-Fi's popularity will be primarily in homes and offices, Jacobs believes. For more of his comments, read "Who Will Deliver the Wireless Future?"
