Users of smart phones equipped with Nokia's Series 60 software running on top of the Symbian operating system can download a mobile phone browser featuring small-screen rendering technology from Norway's Opera Software.

Users of Nokia's 3650, for instance, can test the Opera browser for Series 60-based handsets free of charge for a trial period of 14 days, the company said Tuesday in a statement at a Symbian conference in London.

After that, they can purchase the software for $21.90.

Going Mobile

The availability of the Opera mobile browser for Series 60-based phones follows the February launch of the company's small-screen rendering, or SSR, technology in the P800 handset manufactured by Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, according to the statement.

Unlike mobile Web systems in the past requiring developers to code pages in special languages, Opera's SSR technology takes a Web page written in HTML and reformats it to fit on a smaller screen, thus eliminating the need for horizontal scrolling, the company said.

Opera, a privately-held company in Oslo, Norway, develops software for smart phones, PDAs, interactive TV, and other devices.
