Best Buy: IBM ThinkPad R40

The IBM ThinkPad R40 recently hit our Top 15 Notebook PCs chart in the top slot. It's one of the fastest notebooks we've seen--and its battery ran nearly 3.5 hours. Add a built-in DVD/CD-RW combo drive, a 15-inch display, an easy-to-use keyboard, dual pointing devices, two USB 2.0 ports, and built-in wireless network antennas, and you've got one thought-provoking ThinkPad. The unit we evaluated cost $2149, which makes it a bit pricey but an excellent value overall. For the latest prices, check our Product Finder.

News: Latest Dell Notebooks

Dell has updated its portable line with new Inspiron and Latitude models based on Intel's Pentium M processor and a combination of wireless chips. The Inspiron 500m and Latitude D500 both weigh less than 5.5 pounds. Each is available in basic $1199 models that include a 1.3-GHz Pentium M processor, 128MB of DDR SDRAM, a 14.1-inch display, a 20GB hard drive, and a CD-ROM drive. For $89 more you can add support for 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11a wireless standards to the Inspiron 500m. The Latitude D500, a Centrino laptop, contains the Pentium M processor, Intel's 855 chip set, and the Intel Pro/Wireless 2100 hardware.
