A widescreen display on Hewlett-Packard's new Compaq Presario X1000 notebook makes it easier to work on multiple applications in the same screen, or edit digital media, the company said in a release.

Consumers aren't looking for mobility in a notebook as much as they want performance, said Fredrik Hamberger, senior product marketing manager for HP. HP used Intel's Centrino package of chips in this notebook, but thinks the widescreen display and media ports set the notebook apart from competitors, he said.

The Palo Alto, California, company built a Secure Digital/MultiMedia Memory Card slot so users could transfer files from digital cameras and MP3 players, Hamberger said. The notebook also comes with three USB 2.0 ports and an IEEE 1394 port for video transfers.

Available Options

HP is only making one configuration of the X1000 available as of May 21. That notebook will cost $2,399, after a $100 rebate, with a 1.4-GHz Pentium M processor, the Intel Pro Wireless 2100 chip, 512MB of double data rate memory, a high-speed 60GB hard drive that operates at 5,400 revolutions per minute, a Mobility Radeon 9200 graphics card from ATI Technologies, and a DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive.

Configurable models will be available in June. A base configuration with a 1.3-GHz Pentium M processor, the Intel Pro Wireless 2100 chip, a Mobility Radeon 7500 graphics card from ATI, a 40GB hard drive, 256MB of DDR memory, and a CD-ROM drive will cost $1,299, after the $100 rebate.

The notebooks will launch in the U.S. at first, and HP will roll them out around the rest of the world in the middle of the year, Hamberger said.
