Niche browser maker Opera Software of Norway has released a new version of its Web software aimed at improving the Internet messaging and surfing experience of Linux users.
Opera 7.11 is now available on the open source Linux operating system, following last week's release of a 7.11 version for Microsoft's Windows, Opera said Monday in a statement.
"What we've done is to bring Opera for Linux up to the same level of development as Opera for Windows," said Live Leer, a spokesperson for Opera. "Our Linux users have demanded changes and with this version, we've delivered them."
Free or Fee
The latest version of Opera for Linux can be downloaded from the company's site. The free download comes with a sponsored banner advertisement in the right-hand corner of the user interface, according to Leer. Customers who wish to have the browser operate without the ad can pay a $39 fee to have it removed, she said.
Until now, the Norwegian software company has offered an integrated e-mail client in the browser only to its Windows users, according to Leer. With the new version, the company offers an integrated e-mail client and e-mail organizer, which automatically categorizes and sorts e-mail messages, she said.
The list of new features in Opera 7.11 for Linux includes two new buttons in the toolbar to speed up Web navigation, allowing the browser to anticipate where users want to go next.
