Sony Shares Plans for New DVD Product
PSX device will offer DVD, digital video recording, and gaming features.
Sony announced Wednesday that it will launch a new consumer electronics product that combines DVD and digital video recording facilities with the ability to play PlayStation 2 games.
The PSX will be launched in Japan within this year, Sony said in a statement Wednesday.
The PSX, however, is not PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 2.5, said Jonathan Fargher, senior PR manager for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.
"It is a high end DVD player that used the PlayStation 2 chipset and is being sold by our consumer electronics division," Fargher said on Wednesday.
New Product Plans
Along with the PSP (PlayStation Portable), due to be launched in 2004, the PSX marks the beginning of a series of products that will merge advanced electronics products with the games sector's leading edge semiconductor technology, Sony said.
The company hopes these products will create a new market for integrated products, it said.
Fargher was unable to say when the product will be available outside Japan.
