Canon U.S.A. has announced a new 5-megapixel PowerShot G5 digital camera and a new LV-7555 LCD multimedia projector.

New PowerShot G

Due for release in June at a suggested retail price of $899, the PowerShot G5 digital camera features a 5-megapixel CCD sensor that captures 2592-by-1944-pixel images. Its 4X all-glass optical zoom lens provides a 35mm film camera equivalent range of 35mm to 140mm, a maximum aperture of f/2.0-3.0, and macro focusing down to 2 inches. The additional 4X digital zoom extends the camera's telephoto capabilities to provide photographers with 16X zoom functionality.

The PowerShot G5 boasts a Wide-Area FlexiZone AF/AE system that lets you focus on off-center subjects without repositioning the camera. It has three metering systems, including Spot Metering, and up to 10X Zoom Playback. An Intelligent Orientation Sensor automatically rotates images for proper viewing during playback. The digital camera also has a 270-degree Swivel LCD screen and a Canon EOS-style control layout.

The camera includes a three-mode built-in flash with red-eye reduction and first- or second-curtain sync; the flash can be operated manually or automatically. In addition, the PowerShot G5 is compatible with Canon's EX-series Speedlite flashes and E-TTL wireless flash accessories, as well as with Canon supplementary lenses.

Like other PowerShot series cameras, the PowerShot G5 has a Direct Connect print function that allows printing without a computer via Canon's line of dye sublimation and Bubble Jet printers.

Canon bundles its ZoomBrowser EX software for PCs. The PowerShot G5's kit also includes a 32MB CompactFlash card, a rechargeable BP-511 lithium-ion battery, a power adapter with A/C cable, a USB interface cable, an AV cable, a wireless remote control, a neck strap, and a lens cap.

LV-7555 Debuts

Canon's new multimedia projector will be available in mid-July at a suggested list price of $7999.

Targeted at meeting centers, big conference rooms, and university theaters, the LV-7555 LCD multimedia projector boasts a brightness rating of 4600 ANSI lumens, 35dB of fan noise, a 900:1 contrast ratio, and native XGA resolution. This new unit will also support SXGA resolution through high-quality compression.

The projector features a new integrated circuit that purportedly improves picture quality through a number of features, including a Color Management function that lets you identify a specific color for manual adjustment; a 2-3 Pull-Down option that minimizes motion artifacts on DVDs that were transferred from film; an Auto Picture Control that automatically optimizes image quality; and an Intelligent Image Sharpness function for analyzing an incoming signal and sharpening only the areas that need attention. The IC chip will convert all interlaced signals, including 1080i HDTV.

The Canon LV-7555 provides connectivity via a DVI terminal, as well as inputs for a range of devices including DVD players, HDTV sets, VCRs, digital camcorders, and digital cameras. Four optional lenses are also available, including lenses that support wide-angle and zoom functions.
