Microsoft is set to announce new cable TV software Monday, as the software maker moves to get a foothold in the potentially lucrative industry.
Microsoft Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates is expected to unveil the TV Foundation software at a U.S. cable industry show on Monday, a U.K. representative for the company confirmed.
The software is aimed at allowing cable providers to deliver new digital services and on-demand programming.
Earlier Efforts
The initiative, undertaken by Microsoft's TV division, comes after nearly a decade of effort by the Redmond, Washington company to establish itself in the TV industry.
But while earlier efforts concentrated on delivering software to consumers' living rooms, the new software is aimed at giving hard-hit cable providers, which have experienced ramped-up competition from satellite TV providers, the ability to offer their customers new programming and services.
More details of on the new software will be available at 2 p.m. EDT Monday, when the company is officially set to release the announcement, the representative said.
