Bugs and Fixes: A Big Microsoft Mess--Patches Gone Bad

In Brief: Centrino Crashes

Owners of Centrino-based portables may face "blue screens" when using VPN software. Intel advises you to disable PROSet Adapter Switching (see "Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 LAN MiniPCI Adapters"). Nortel Networks offers a workaround for its Contivity VPN Client at Customer Support. Head to "Intel Squashes Centrino Bug" for our news story.

Microsoft Fakes

Beware of e-mail messages that seem to be sent from support@microsoft.com. The messages have a subject line like "your password." But they are bogus. If you click a file attachment, you may unleash the Palyh worm. Go to "New Worm: W32/Palyh@MM" for Microsoft's bulletin.

Player Update

WindowS Media Player 7.1 and 8.0 have a flaw that could let a hacker take over your PC while you download new skins. Get the patch at "Flaw in Windows Media Player Skins".
