Top 10 19-Inch CRT Monitors

If you're not ready for flat.

They're not as sleek as flat-panel displays, but these traditional 19-inch monitors have larger viewing areas than LCD monitors costing $100 more (in some instances). Granted, you may need a bigger desk to hold one of these puppies, but if you want the most screen space for your buck, try a 19-inch CRT monitor. Here are ten of the best. For more information, see PC World's detailed rankings.

#1: Samsung SyncMaster 957mb. If you want sharp text and vivid graphics at a reasonable price, try this PC World Best Buy. There's even an adjustable highlight box that lets you brighten selected screen areas. Price when ranked: $319.

#2: Philips 109B43. The colors this PC World Best Buy produces are lively and realistic on photographic images. Fine-tuning the monitor's controls is intuitive, and it comes with image-adjustment software. It also has the best manual of the bunch. Price when ranked: $219.

#3: Compaq S9500. This monitor provides vivid and accurate photographic images. The on-screen controls are easy to use and get high marks, but image-adjusting software isn't included. Price when ranked: $229.

#4: ViewSonic G90f. Colors look rich and lively when you view photographic images, but text can appear small and, at times, blurry. Here's another monitor that includes image adjustment software. Price when ranked: $239.

#5: Dell M992. Its crisp text, even at small font sizes, makes this a natural choice for users who do a lot of on-screen reading. The accompanying CD includes a color-mapping profile, and the controls are well organized. Price when ranked: $249.

#6: Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 930SB. This monitor displays clear text and comes with easy-to-use features, such as toggling to a brighter setting with one button press, and color adjustment software. Price when ranked: $340.

#7: Hitachi CM721F. This model is better with graphics than text. It comes with a fair number of features, good on-screen controls, and a thorough manual. Price when ranked: $266.

#8: NEC MultiSync FE991SB-SK. Graphics look detailed, but text isn't razor-sharp. The unit's strengths include straightforward controls and advanced features like focus control. Price when ranked: $270.

#9: IBM P97. Rich, realistic colors and good-looking images make this monitor ideal for graphics applications. But it's expensive, and it would be nice if the user controls were be more intuitive. Price when ranked: $409.

#10: Hansol 920D. This monitor is well-priced for its exceptional graphics quality. It also displays crisp text. But the on-screen controls are difficult to navigate and the manual is not very helpful. Price when ranked: $249.
