Roll Your Own High-Speed AOL Access

AOL doesn't offer high-speed connections, but there is an alternative.

AOL isn't moving particularly quickly when it comes to assembling a faster-than-56-kbps network. Although it's conducting DSL trials in certain areas--San Diego is one--you're better off bringing a high-speed connection to AOL than waiting for it to bring high speed to you.

You can connect to AOL through an Internet service provider via ISDN, DSL, or cable by changing the sign-up procedure. Connect to your ISP, launch AOL, and then click Setup on the Sign On screen. Choose "Create a location for use with new access numbers or an ISP," and click Next. In the Add Location window, enter a new name (like ISP or DSL), then click "Add a custom connection (for example, TCP/IP)" and click Next. Click Sign On.

AOL calls this the BYOA (Bring Your Own Access) Plan. The price? A flat $9.95 per month for unlimited access to AOL.
