Inexpensive NEC Laser Includes Duplexer

The $799 SuperScript 1800 claims 17 pages per minute and can automatically print on both sides of the page.

NEC made a big splash a few months ago with a printer for the home-office and small-office market (its SuperScript 870 laser was PC World's Best Buy in October). Now NEC hopes to match that performance with a laser printer for the corporate market, where the company has fielded lackluster products for quite a while.

PC World has not yet tested the SuperScript 1800, but if it lives up to its specifications, NEC could have another winner. The SuperScript 1800 engine runs at 17 pages per minute, which means real-world printing speed on standard text documents will probably hover near the 12-ppm mark. That would be right on par for an ordinary $799 printer.

But the 1800 is not ordinary, because your $799 also buys a built-in duplexer, allowing you to print both sides of the page automatically. On most other printers, this feature costs $300 or $400 extra, if it is an option at all.

With bargain pricing like this, it's no surprise that NEC has a contingency plan for making more money off the 1800. To serve a workgroup of more than two people, the 1800 requires a $299 Ethernet connector. (The printer comes with a PC parallel port as standard equipment.)

For $249 you can add an extra 500-sheet paper feeder, which bumps the paper capacity up from 600 to 1100 sheets.
