News: Broadband Takes Flight
Boeing's in-flight broadband Internet access service, Connexion, will be installed on some Japan Airlines aircrafts next year. Look for the service to become available on JAL routes between Japan and London in December 2004, the carrier said. From there, the service will expand to other routes between Japan and Europe and Japan and the Americas. British Airways and Singapore Airlines are evaluating the system for possible installation. Boeing has firm deals with Lufthansa and Scandinavian Airline Systems.
News: Iomega's Latest Storage Formats
Iomega will launch two removable, magnetic-based storage formats next year. Digital Capture Technology disks, aimed at consumers, are about 2 inches in diameter and will have a capacity of 1.5GB. Drives will be available either as internal models or as PC Card devices. The format will be officially launched at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. The PC Card drives are expected to cost about $149, with disks around $10 each.
Meanwhile, the company's new Removable Rigid Disk format will offer a capacity of 35GB per cartridge and is aimed at small-to-midsize businesses. RRD is bootable, and Iomega says it's developed a system called "boot and run" that will make it possible to launch your computer from a backup in the event of a system failure. Drives are scheduled to be commercially available in the first quarter of 2004 and should cost $349, with cartridges costing $39 to $49.
