When you're buying a PDA, the toughest decision is: Should you get one with a phone? The perfect design melding a PDA and a mobile phone remains elusive, but the latest models are getting closer. The first-place Treo 600 from PalmOne, for example, has clear sound (with or without the included headset) and a small but easy-to-read screen. Our three top standard PDAs have built-in Wi-Fi, and the number one Dell Axim X3i includes great software that eases connections.
We formed our chart by both reviewing new models and reevaluating the best PDAs we've covered recently in our New Products section and in our September 2003 feature "Well-Connected Handhelds." One new model, the ViewSonic Pocket PC V36, earned the number five spot on our standard PDAs chart. In addition, we reviewed the Sony Clie PEG-TJ35, and we took a closer look at the PalmOne Zire 21. We liked the TJ35's substantial good looks and its fine color screen, but we found the $250 price a bit high for what it offers. And though we can't quibble with the Zire 21's bargain price of $99, that barebones model didn't offer enough features to earn a chart position.
