Wrapped in a pewter-toned case with silvery side plates, the TJ35 has an elegant and solid appearance that belies its modest 4.9-ounce weight. Equally attractive is the sharp, 320-by-320-pixel transflective LCD screen, which shows off Sony's stylized interface for the Palm 5.1 operating system. You can attach an included flip cover to protect the screen.

A scroll wheel and two directional arrow buttons below the screen promise easy, one-hand navigation--but they aren't implemented as thoroughly as they could be. Though they allowed us to scroll through and select applications on the home screen, they generally provided few or no navigation options once we got into a particular app, and we had to pull out the stylus to continue. Lacking a syncing cradle, the TJ35 comes with a small, easy-to-misplace adapter that links the included power and USB cables to a connector at the bottom of the device. At the top, the TJ35 has a stereo headset port and a Sony Memory Stick Pro expansion slot to augment the TJ35's built-in 32MB of RAM.

The main drawback to the TJ35 is its street price of $250. For the same amount, you can buy PalmOne's Zire 71, which matches the TJ35's main specs but has an integrated camera and a cradle. Or you can spend about $50 less on PalmOne's comparably equipped and even lighter Tungsten E. Plus, PalmOne's products come with a one-year warranty, while Sony's coverage is limited to 90 days.

Though the TJ35's clean design is admirable, the device doesn't offer killer features to justify its premium price.
