News: Smarter Smart Phones on the Way
SyChip, a chip maker, is currently testing software that would allow its Secure Digital I/O wireless LAN card to add Wi-Fi capability to smart phones with SD slots.
A smart phone equipped with the SDIO card and appropriate software driver could make an Internet connection via an 802.11b Wi-Fi network as well as a wireless cellular network, the company says. The phone could also act as a cordless voice over Internet Protocol phone when connected to a corporate IP telephony service. The upshot: You could browse the Web using a Wi-Fi or a cell connection, and you could also make cheap phone calls over the Internet.
SyChip's SDIO 802.11b WLAN card is currently sold by SanDisk, Socket Communications, and ViewSonic for about $130. However, SyChip must develop new software drivers for smart phone use. Look for drivers to become available for Windows Mobile-based and Palm OS-based smart phones in the first quarter of 2004.
