Bottom Line: Super-affordable unit offers a great picture. I particularly liked its full complement of handy navigation controls, and was impressed that it played the vast majority of media I threw at it. The $49 TV tuner option seals the deal.
Bottom Line: I liked this unit's unique dial navigation pad--which worked well in lieu of the usual playback buttons--and the funky flip-around display. Includes an FM transmitter for playing audio via your car stereo.
Bottom Line: The only tablet-style player we tested, this model is retro handsome, with shiny black and silver accents. But don't leave home without the remote--the unit alone lacks the controls that let you navigate DVD menus.
Bottom Line: This unit's strengths are super-compact size, light weight, and good media compatibility. But its picture had jagged lines and color bleeding, and black-and-white movies had a distinctly purple tint. Other nit: With no fast-forward or rewind controls, navigation is by chapter only.
Bottom Line: Stylish model has a brilliant high-resolution display that leaves the other contenders sputtering in the dust. It's expensive, but it's worth it if you value image quality. Only unit with component video outputs. Also, this was the only unit with limited support for playing DVDs created on a DVD recorder.
