Wilhelm Ratings: Wilhelm Imaging Research, a developer of respected tests for projecting inkjet photo print longevity, has launched a certification program for printers, inks, and papers. To qualify for a WIR Certification seal on its packaging, a product must be projected by WIR tests to produce prints that will last 25 years in standard illumination conditions, and at least as long in album/dark storage conditions. Products from Epson, Hewlett-Packard, and Lexmark earned the first WIR seals.

Product Pipeline

Netscape 8: On the heels of Microsoft's announcement of plans for Internet Explorer 7, America Online has posted a public beta of Netscape version 8 for Windows, with a shipping release likely by the end of April. Netscape 8's security features include the ability to adjust settings based on whether a site is trusted or not. For example, it warns you when you go to a phishing or spyware site that appears on a list that's updated several times a day.

Palm Phones: PalmSource, which develops and licenses the Palm OS operating system, is launching two mobile phone platforms based on software from its new China MobileSoft subsidiary. The PalmSource Feature Phone will appear on budget cell phones, while the Linux-based PalmSource MFone will power upscale handsets. Both will look like today's Palm OS, but neither will run existing Palm OS apps. PalmSource says that the next version of its top-of-the-line Cobalt OS for PDAs and other devices will be Linux-based, as well, but will run most legacy apps in an emulation mode.
