From Shrinkwraps to Sites

The introduction of the free intranet service, which will go live next week, is a departure for the company which had its roots in the prepackaged intranet application market. IntraNetics, which was founded in 1997, sold shrinkwrapped intranet applications.

"It was the classic way of doing business and we garnered around 200 customers," said Intranets.com CEO Steve Crummey. "With this new online service, in the last three weeks we have signed up over 6,000 companies, or around 300,000 users. We could never had done this without the experience of IntraNetics and its applications. We learned what people liked and disliked."

The IntraNetics software will continue to ship and the company plans to support its existing product line, although it is unlikely that the company will bring out upgrades, officials say. Intranets.com is owned by idealabs, a prominent Internet incubator firm.
