Mobile Computing News, Reviews, & Tips

Reader Response: Hilton Garden Inn Means Business

In response to my recent request for comments on hotel business centers, Irv Yokoyama of San Diego says he has become loyal to the Hilton Garden Inn. The chain, part of the Hilton Hotels conglomerate, offers guests the ability to print for free over the Internet to the business center in their hotel. "I can print to the next [Hilton Garden Inn] where I'll be staying, too," Irv says, so the document will already be printed when he arrives. Hilton Garden Inns offer free in-room broadband Internet access, too.

The hotel's printing service is supplied by PrinterOn, a competitor to PrintMe that provides guest printing at Doubletree and other hotels.

Gadget Accessory Review: The Best Headphones

Just because your new MP3 player looks good doesn't mean the included headphones sound good. In fact, in-the-box headphones often sound pretty lame. So what's an audiophile to do? For some options, check out PC World reviewer Richard Baguley's favorite headphones.

World Class Winners: Best Mobile Tools

What are the must-have pocket rockets of 2005? Among the winners of PC World's World Class Awards for Mobile Tools are the BlackBerry 7100t ($300) smart phone, Dell's Axim X30 ($199) PDA, and the Motorola Razr V3 cell phone ($400).

Gadget Tip: Power Your Gadgets in the Car

Need to recharge your notebook or PDA battery on the go? AC Anywhere from Belkin turns your car's 12V outlet (formerly known as the cigarette lighter) into a standard AC power outlet, suitable for rejuicing notebooks, PDAs, and other devices, says PC World contributing editor Kirk Steers. A 300-watt version ($80) includes two sockets; a 140W version costs $60.

Gadget News: A 'Disposable' Camcorder

Some CVS drug stores are now carrying a single-use camcorder. The Pure Digital 20 ($30) can capture up to 20 minutes of video in internal memory. When you're done, CVS will process your Spielbergian epic, burning it onto a standard DVD for an additional $13, then recycle the camcorder.

Gadget News: TiVo on a Handheld

TiVoToGo, the service that lets you transfer TV programs recorded on a TiVo machine to a notebook, now supports some Windows Mobile-based Portable Media Centers, too, including Creative Zen, Samsung, and IRiver models.

Suggestion Box

Is there a particularly cool mobile computing product or service I've missed? Got a spare story idea in your back pocket? Tell me about it. However, I regret that I'm unable to respond to tech-support questions, due to the volume of e-mail I receive.
