Bright Lights, Small Projector

Compaq's MP1600 offers solid slide and video performance in a tiny package.

The Rough Edges

As is typical with a first-generation product, the MP1600 is lacking a few features. First, in order to keep the size, weight, and price of the projector down, Compaq omitted built-in speakers and video inputs. To support motion video, you'll have to shell out $250 for an input module that snaps on to the projector's digital flat-panel port. But even this module won't let you input both composite and S-video sources simultaneously--other projectors in this category let you toggle between the two sources. Also, the absence of a zoom lens really limits where you can place the projector, and there's no remote control for adjusting the image.

But the MP1600 makes up for these failings with its relatively low price and lightweight portability, and it marks an impressive projector debut for Compaq. For the mobile business presenter, the MP1600 is a solid choice.
