Sony on Wednesday unveiled a new clock radio and boombox that feature iPod docks. Both are scheduled to be available at retail stores in August for "about $100," according to the company.
Both devices feature 30-pin dock connectors to make them iPod-compatible. It's a bit of a turnabout for the company: Sony's own emphasis on its Walkman-branded products in the past has made the company reluctant to support the iPod.
"Consumers are treating the iPod as a format, like the compact disc, which is why Sony is now delivering audio products to support it," said Andrew Sivori, director of personal audio products in the Digital Imaging and Audio Division at Sony Electronics.
The ICF-C1iP clock radio includes a wireless remote control that enables users to control the iPod's functions, tune in to radio stations, and control the volume. The device also features a full function alarm clock that will wake you with a buzz, the radio, or activate your iPod. It also features automatic Daylight Savings Time adjustment and adjustable brightness control.
The ZS-S2iP boombox has a built-in digital AM/FM tuner, an integrated CD player that also supports CD-R/RW playback and a wireless remote control. In addition to a dock connector, the ZS-S2iP also sports an auxiliary input and supports AC/DC operation so you can power it with batteries. The boombox features Sony's "Mega Bass" sound technology.
Sony's Web site hadn't been updated with information about the new devices as Playlist posted this article.
