Kingston Technology on Monday introduced a new version of its Ultimate CompactFlash storage cards, doubling speeds from 133x to 266x. The new cards come in 2, 4 and 8GB capacities for US$83, $144 and $280 respectively.

At 266x, the new cards can read data at up to 45 megabytes per second, and can write data at 40 megabytes per second, making them the fastest flash memory cards that Kingston has yet offered.

Kingston Flash memory product manager Mark Akoubian explained that the new cards are aimed at digital SLR cameras, whose users are always looking for faster write speeds.

Kingston also provides a free utility for Mac OS X and Windows called MediaRECOVER, that it claims can help restore lost, deleted or corrupted image files. The software is available as a download from Kingston's Web site.

Kingston's Web site had not been updated with information about the new 266x cards as Macworld posted this article.
