Apple Updates iMac Offerings

The iMac line gets a complete overhaul and Core 2 Duo processors.

Apple announced an overhaul of its iMac line today, replacing the white enclosure of its all-in-one desktop with a new aluminum-and-glass design. The announcement came at a press event at Apple's Cupertino, Calif., headquarters.

The new iMac comes in 20- and 24-inch configurations, bringing an end to Apple's 17-inch iMac offerings. The updated machines will run on an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, with clock speeds of either 2GHz and 2.4GHz. A 2.8GHz chip is available as a configure-to-order model.

The machines will ship with 1GB of installed RAM with memory capacity of 4GB. The low-end iMac will feature an ATI Radeon HD 2400XT graphics card while the other two configurations will come with ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro graphics.

The iMac also gets a new keyboard that matches the desktop's thin design. It features several dedicated keys for Expose, Dashboard, and media controls, among others.

The iMac is available in three configurations: a 20-inch, 2GHz machine for $1,199; a 20-inch 2.4GHz model for $1,499; and a 24-inch 2.4GHz offering for $1,799.
