A new scanner from Canon promises faster scan times, thanks a new lamp that allows scanning to begin instantaneously from sleep mode.

Announced Monday, the CanoScan 8800F Color Image Scanner features a high-luminance white LED lamp instead of a fluorescent lamp. The new lamp eliminates warm-up time, allowing the 8800F to finish scanning three times faster than in previous models, according to Canon.

In addition, the CanoScan 8800F offers a maximum optical resolution of 4,800-by-9,600 dots-per-inch. It can scan up to 12 35mm slides and negatives at a time and comes equipped with Film Automatic Retouching and Enhancement technology for reducing dust, scratches, fading, and graininess from photos. The scanner features seven EZ Buttons that let users easily copy, scan, e-mail, or create PDF files.

Besides unveiling the CanoScan 8800F model Monday, Canon also announced the new CanoScan LiDE90, which the company says is the smallest ever scanner in its LiDE series. The 14.4-by-9.9-by-1.6-inch scanner comes with a stand that allows it to be positioned vertically on a desk.

The LiDE90 features a maximum optical resolution of 2,400-by-4,800-dpi and a USB 2.0 interface. It has four EZ buttons for quick copying, scanning, e-mailing, and PDF creation.

The CanoScan 8800F Color Image Scanner sells for $199.99. Canon priced the CanoScan LiDE90 at $79.99.
