Sony's European boss admits in an interview published Friday that the PSP has suffered from a shortage of games.

"Honestly... we should have had more original PSP games," David Reeves told GamesIndustry.biz when asked about the upcoming extended services for PSP.

"We took this decision maybe a year ago and said what we'll do now is we'll bring out more services because we know that the games are coming."

Reeves added that the company is now committed to releasing games that rival the DS's offering.

"We now have to go back and think more about the games because if we lose that advantage - well it's not really an advantage, it's the advantage Nintendo have on DS," he said. "It's like in the circus - you've got to keep all the plates up, you know? So the plate we'll be working on now will be the games on PSP."

Since first launching in 2005 and despite respectable sales, the PSP has been widely criticized for a lack of compelling games. The handheld has sold 25 million systems worldwide, nearly half the total of Nintendo's popular DS.

In July, Sony unveiled an updated PSP due in September that will retail for US$169 (comparison pics here).
