More Options Arrive for Orb Drives

Big, fast removable-media drives now come in SCSI and USB versions.

Castlewood Systems has introduced the latest versions of its magnetoresistive technology, 2.2GB removable-media Orb drives. (The EIDE version won a Best Buy in the June 1999 "Floppy Killers" roundup--see link at right--for situations in which you need a big and fast removable drive.)

The Combo external SCSI Orb ($199.95) works with both PCs and Macintoshes, and adds a common interface for both platforms. And the Orb GB Universal Serial Bus version ($249.95) delivers hot swap support and a pass-through port for connecting other USB devices.

Both drives are available immediately and deliver a sustained data transfer rate of up to 12.2 megabits per second. Additional 2.2-mbps media lists for $29.95.

The Combo SCSI Orb includes an external SCSI cable; the Orb GB USB, a lightweight USB cable. Both drives come with an external power supply, manual, installation software, and Orb Tools software.

Castlewood also announced this week that it has entered into alliances with two manufacturing companies that will produce versions of the Orb with additional interfaces. CNF Mobile Solutions will deliver a PC Card version of the Orb, and Rantic Labs an IEEE-1394 (Firewire) version. Both are expected to be available in January. Pricing has not yet been announced.
