10/9 Hot Pic: "Bike in the Light," by George Alger, Ventura, California

George writes: "I took this photo near my house while I was out for a sunrise walk. I used a Canon SD500 and heavily bracketed the exposure to gain a pleasing balance between the morning light coming in through the tunnel and the much darker sides of the tunnel walls."

10/16 Hot Pic: "Glance of Africa," by Dave Hicks, College Station, Texas

Dave writes: "I took this picture while spending a summer in the village of Khohlo-Ntso in the southern African country of Lesotho. Our village was hosting a dance competition for the surrounding villages."

10/23 Hot Pic: "The Strawberry," by Diana Orlando, Edison, New Jersey

Diana writes: "I watched as my granddaughter consumed one strawberry after another, and I saw a great opportunity for a neat picture. The strawberry was huge and so red that I decided to focus on it, so I tweaked the colors in Adobe Photoshop."

10/29 Hot Pic: "Last of the Summer Buoys," by Kelli True, Hampstead, New Hampshire

Kelli says: "My husband, son, and I went camping near Acadia National Park. I brought my Canon 30D with a 50mm lens. One afternoon we ran across a store with its outside walls covered in buoys. I did only a small amount of editing in Photoshop."

Linda writes: "I took this picture at night with only the available light. It is a shot of one of the many artistic store window displays found in Tokyo's famous shopping area, the Ginza."

Bruce says that he took this photo of a fire department ladder truck using his Canon Rebel XT on a very hot, Florida summer day.

David says he shot this silhouette at Ocean Beach in San Diego with his Canon Rebel XT.

10/23 Runner-Up: "Lazy Afternoon," by Wayne Boardman, York, Maine

Wayne writes: "This herring gull seemed content to spend the afternoon perched on a dory moored in a York, Maine tidal inlet. I took the photo with my new Canon S5 IS and then just cropped and sharpened it and applied a black-and-white filter."
