Amazon on Thursday announced that it will add music from Sony BMG to its Amazon MP3 digital music download service. The catalog will be added later this month, according to Amazon.
Amazon MP3 sells songs in the MP3 format, which eschews any sort of Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology. The files, encoded at 256 Kbps, can be played back on just about any device that plays MP3 files, including Macs, iPods and iPhones. Most individuals tracks are priced from US89 to 99 cents a piece, with complete albums often priced from $5.99 to $9.99. The service launched in September 2007 and has already built a catalog of 3.1 million songs, as well as the support of -- with the addition of Sony BMG -- all major labels (and more than 33,000 independents).
Sony BMG artists whose music will be available for download through Amazon MP3 include popular musicians like Justin Timberlake and Beyonce, rockers Foo Fighters and Santana, and many others.
