What You Lose With Light

Eudora 4.3's Light mode vanquishes ads--and some features. Here's a list of what you won't get.

Editor's Note: Qualcomm is breaking new ground with version 4.3 of its venerable Eudora e-mail client. The full version of the program is now available for free--just head to the Eudora Web site and download the app. By default, the program will display ads; paying for the software or choosing a reduced feature set will make the ads disappear. Our Daily Tips this week serve as an introduction to Eudora 4.3 and its ad "feature."

Eudora 4.3 is an upgrade in name only from Eudora Pro 4.2: Beyond the introduction of rotating ads in the lower right corner of the screen, the differences are slight. But if you opt to use the no-ads Light mode, some major features will disappear, including:

  • Spell check

  • Filters that play sounds; open a message or mailbox; or forward, reply to, redirect, or print a message

  • Message styles other than font, size, and the bold, italic, and underline characteristics

  • Toolbar customization

  • Multiple personalities (the only way to check multiple e-mail accounts)

  • The "Fcc:" (forward a copy to another mailbox) feature

If you can do without those features, the choice isn't tough: Go with Light mode. Remember, though, that anything you implement while using the Sponsored mode (with ads) is unavailable if you switch to Light. For instance, any buttons you add to the toolbar will be dimmed if you switch to Light mode.

But there's a way around Light's limitations. Let's say you really need to check multiple e-mail accounts. You can do so by setting up your multiple personalities in Sponsored mode. For everyday work with your primary account (the first one you set up), you can stick to Light mode. When you need check your other accounts you can switch back to Sponsored mode. The same trick works when you want to enable a filter for automatic vacation replies or use other advanced tools.
