United Connects IPods, IPhones on Int'l Flights

United Airlines on Monday announced plans to offer a new in-flight entertainment system on some of its aircraft that will enable iPod and iPhone users to connect their devices.

The rollout begins with United flight 936, which leaves Washington D.C. this afternoon at 5:40 PM for Zurich, Switzerland. United plans to outfit its entire fleet of international, widebody aircraft with the new entertainment system over the next two years. Business and first-class passengers will also get "lie-flat" seats, on-demand entertainment and iPod and iPhone connectivity.

The new entertainment system sports a 30-pin connector that attaches to the dock connector on the iPhone or iPod. The entertainment system the United planes will use was developed by Panasonic Avionics.
