Ditto Max Pro Born Again

10GB tape drive now offered by Tecmar, but it still suffers from slow performance.

Back Up--Slowly

To test normal data throughput, we backed up 3.2GB of data with Ditto Tools, using its no-compression default. The job took a leisurely 2 hours and 51 minutes to complete--a bit more than 1GB per hour. The second pass to verify the stored data took only a little longer, 2 hours and 53 minutes. The times are comparable to those posted by the parallel port version of HP's Colorado 20GB Travan drive, which we tested recently--in a word, slow.

If you need a versatile, inexpensive backup solution and already have data stored on Ditto cartridges, the Ditto Max Professional will fit the bill. However, there are faster, simpler backup drives available for even less, such as Sony's SuperStation, a 5GB/10GB IDE product street-priced at about $126. If you can spend a little more, HP's internal IDE Colorado 20GB Travan drive will give you twice the capacity, for about $259.
