Sonnet Technologies on Tuesday announced the 1 terabyte (TB) version of its Fusion F2 external RAID system, available early this month for US$995.

The Fusion F2 is a portable eSATA RAID system. The Fusion F2 is a portable two-drive RAID system that uses external Serial ATA (eSATA) to connect to a host Mac or PC. It can connect using a Sonnet Tempo SATA ExpressCard/34 controller for the MacBook Pro, as well.

The portable RAID system uses two 2.5-inch hard disk drive mechanism mounted side by side in an aluminum enclosure, measuring a bit larger than two stacked CD cases It can achieve up to 134MB per second read and write sustained transfer rates, according to Sonnet. The design doesn't require an internal fan, either.

The Fusion F2 transfers data by eSATA (and thus requires a host controller card to work on the Mac, as Macs don't yet feature built-in eSATA ports), but it pulls power from an available FireWire port. It can work in RAID 0 or RAID 1 configurations.
