Electronic Arts (EA) has announced plans to publish Id Software's newest game in development, Rage. More information is expected to be announced about the new first-person shooter at QuakeCon 2008, which happens in Dallas, Texas at the end of the month.

Rage is the first game based on Id Software's new Tech5 graphics engine, which made its worldwide debut at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in 2007. Rage made its debut at QuakeCon 2007, where Id co-founder John Carmack revealed a post-apocalyptic, Road Warrior-type environment that combined driving with first-person shooting action.

When Carmack revealed details about Rage last year, he called it a "bleeding edge" project, and said that with all of its complex geometry and textures, the game will span multiple DVD-ROM discs.

Rage is in development for Mac OS X and Windows -- and Id is developing Tech5 to run natively on the Mac. That will be a departure for EA, which has emphasized TransGaming's Cider translation layer technology as a way to get its games running on Mac OS X.
