Corel Buys Inprise/Borland
With programming tools vendor, Corel aims to create Linux powerhouse.
The merger of Corel and Inprise/Borland (which offers Internet access infrastructure and application development tools and services) brings together two of the largest teams of Linux developers. Corel recently released Corel Linux, a desktop operating system. Inprise/Borland recently announced Jbuilder 3 Foundation, a pure Java development environment for Linux. The two companies said that they had total revenues of $418 million in 1999 and currently have over $200 million in cash.
The combined company will provide training, education, and migration paths so that users can more fully understand and exploit the power of Linux-based Internet solutions, according to the release. The merger is subject to the approval of the shareholders for both companies, and is expected to be completed by late spring.
