WinBook XL2

Nicely designed desktop replacement is a fair deal.

WHAT'S HOT: "What's lukewarm" would better describe the XL2's capabilities. Although its performance doesn't top the chart, you get plenty of speed for the price.

WHAT'S NOT: The WinBook's 2.6-hour battery life is unimpressive and support hours only adequate--just 13 hours on weekdays and 7 hours on Saturday.

WHAT ELSE: The all-gray, medium-weight WinBook comes with a DVD-ROM drive and a fixed floppy drive, both conveniently located on the front of the notebook. The two PC Card slots sit on either side of the case (instead of in the usual stacked arrangement), which keeps the case under two inches. Overall, the notebook has a sturdy, well-crafted feel, with a fine keyboard and solid port covers. It takes a screwdriver and some patience to reach the memory and the hard drive, but users should still be able to handle upgrades themselves. The plentiful documentation includes a setup poster, a thorough manual (which unfortunately lacks an index), and an electronic manual on the hard drive.

BEST USE: A fine choice for anyone taking a middle-of-the-road approach: It doesn't excel in any one area, but it doesn't fail either.
